Blood on the Display Easel: The Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis Pt. 1
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, American filmmaker Herschell Gordon Lewis is seen one of the originator’s and innovators of the “splatter film” subgenres. It is argued that there would be no 80s slasher film movement or current crop of ultraviolent horror films if Lewis did not pave the way. His influence on the horror genre has earned him the title of the “Godfather of Gore” because of his buckets of blood on the display easel film style. He did a wide range of films in his lifetime in many different genres, from exploitation films (“She-Devils on Wheels”) to juvenile delinquent films that were popular in the 50s and 60s (“The Pill” and “Suburban Roulette”) and his ever-popular splatter films.
Lewis began his career doing low budget erotic and exploitation films with collaborator David F. Friedman. Their first success was “The Adventures of Lucky Pierre” which was made for less than $8,000 and grossed over $12,000 in a single theater over a week’s run upon opening. The film has gained slight status as an underground cult b-movie hit with numerous artists and writers referencing the film in their works.
After the little nudie films started fizzle out, Lewis moved into uncharted territory with “Blood Feast,” considered the first gore film in America. Back then films did not have ratings like they do now but “Blood Feast” would definitely get an R rating today for violence and gore. This low budget horror film about a crazy Egyptian caterer/mad scientist who kills people so that he can use their body parts in his meals and for sacrifices. It was an immediate success and infamous because of its explicit gore and violence. The killer in the movie is seen today as one of the original “machete-wielding madmen” and an obvious influence on the killers in films like “Friday the 13th” and “Halloween.” Always the busnessman, Lewis made what he called a “Blood Trilogy” including the films “Two Thousand Maniacs” and “Color Me Blood Red” before pulling out of the super gorey films as other filmmakers started to make similar films and the market seemed to be reaching a saturation point.
