Demantoid Garnets - Learn All About Them
Demantoid is one of the most supreme and radiant gems available. The name comes from the Dutch and refers to the diamond-like appearance. The demantoid is in fact a member of the andradite family of garnets and is considered the finest of them all and is also thought to be the most precious of all gems-stones. The attraction of this gem is the rarity combined with luminosity.
Favoured by Fabergé
The demantoid was found in the Ural mountains of Russia in 1868 and became one of Carl Fabergé's favourite gemstones to be used in his creations. He was drawn to its brilliance and often used it in his exquisite jewellery creations. With the nightmare of WW1, the stone quickly disappeared with only rare appearances.
Demantoid garnets have also been found in Korea and the Congo but the quality is not to the same standard as those from Russia.
Then in the mid-1990s, demantoid was found in Namibia by a wondering goat-herder. Now the gemstones are hand-quarried from the rock to ensure that the precious rock is not lost.
Expensive Inclusions
The stones mined in Russia have distinctive horsehair-like inclusions. The more pounced, the greater the value. Surprisingly, this is the opposite of what is normally the case with gems.
Unfortunately, the stones found in Namibia are absent of these inclusions, which means they are much cheaper.
Other types of garnet include Almandine, Andradite, Grossular, Tsavorite, Pyrope, Spessartine, Uvarovite. Garnets are also the birthstone for the month of January and is also thought to assist night vision and ensure success.

The mystery of Garnet
There are nearly 25 major kinds of Garnet in nature, including jewelry (if transparent) - pyrope, almandine, grossularite, andradite, uvarovite, spessartine, etc. Garnet got its name from the Latin "pomegranate tree", the grains of which it resembles. Known to man more than three millennia, it has changed several names. Ancient Russian names for this gem are: Venice, Bechet, Scale Insects. Its predominant color is red.
According to Eastern and European beliefs, Garnet symbolizes and embodies the tenacity and strength, the glory and beauty, permanence, fidelity and health, brilliance and purity of the Heavenly Jerusalem. The Persians used to wear Garnet as a protection from natural disasters. They considered it be a royal stone and carved silhouettes of their masters on its surface as a sign of deep respect and devotion.
The ancient book of Commerce (XVI century) mentions that Garnet was "a merry heart, drives away the obscene thoughts, reason and honor abounds, from the thunder and the enemy defends, and from deadly pestilence plague stores, pregnant wives for a long-awaited childbearing leads". It protects against insomnia, unhappiness during travels, cures fever and jaundice. Amulet in the form of gemma with a lion carved on Garnet protects its owner from all diseases. Garnet brings to its owners an excess of warm-heartedness. Those who wear it are hardworking, energetic and happy in marriage.
Red Garnet (pyrope, almandine) is a stone of love, anger, blood, fire and passion. Pliny the Elder used to name it "Carbuncle" (from the Latin "carbo" - coal), assuming that the mineral looks like a glowing ember (it loses its dark hue in the sunlight and often looks like a hot coal indeed). Garnets had been particularly popular in the last century, but later an excess of minerals in the market led to an unfairly decrease in its popularity.
According to legends, everyone who wears red Garnet acquires power over people. It drives away sadness and brings joy, relieves fever, cures headache, heart, brain and improves memory. It was attributed the stimulating properties of healing in wounds, inflammations and flares of anger, the ability to cast out demons from people. It makes an owner fun and enjoyable for others, protects from terrible dreams, as well as from witchcraft and "evil eye". Being on a hand of a man who languishes in a fever or is stupefied by the desire, it becomes warm and dark red. If it is chipped into powder and taken with water it gives a flush of the face, soothes the stomach.
The Crusaders, going to Jerusalem, used to carry Garnet with them in rings in order to protect themselves from injuries and poisons. Garnet creates the most passionate desires, it strongly supports the ambitions and aspirations of its owner to widespread acceptance. However, if its hapless owner has no proper skills, this gemstone will make him constantly unsatisfied, impatient and very envious. It helps to achieve power and high official positions to those people who are naturally active and strong-willed. This mineral absorbing the fiery energy of Mars brings good fortune especially to emotional and energetic people who live in constant tension of their strength. It gives strong energy recharge its owner.
Many people believe that this beautiful gem protects against adultery and calls for gratitude. It promotes good moods of its owner, gives him ease in dances, strengthens the desire to be a loyal friend especially to those who had given this fantastic red gem. This stone awakens passion and love in its owner and surrounding people and therefore it was not recommended to wear it in the company of children. In olden times, for example in ancient Greece and Rome, it was divided into male and female Garnet. The first category included the brightly shining stones and the second one – that shine less.
Black Garnet (Melanie, Shorlomite) helps to better communicate with the world of the dead for knowing its owner's future.
Nowadays garnet jewellry is extremely popular throughout the world.
